Youth Law Day
On June 3, 2011, Judge Richard Jones and the Federal Bar Association's Criminal Law Committee held their third annual Youth Law Day program. Participating in the event were more than 30 high school students from eight different high schools. The purpose of the event was to introduce those students to the career opportunities available in the federal criminal justice system. The program started off with speeches by Judge Jones, Judge Ricardo Martinez, U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan, former Federal Public Defender Irwin Schwartz, and Drew Bouta of the U.S. Attorney's Office. Next was a live taser demonstration conducted by the U.S. Marshals, along with a tour of the lock-up area in which criminal defendants are held before being brought into the courtroom. For the lunch-time portion of the event, the students heard short presentations from a variety of agencies involved in the criminal justice system, including the FBI, the DEA, the Secret Service, the Washington State Patrol, certified court interpreters, and the U.S. Probation Office. The afternoon session featured a mock trial in which high school students participated as attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and even presiding judge. The co-chairs for this year's program were David Smith (who is also Co-Chair of the Criminal Law Committee) and Michael Scoville (of the U.S. Attorney's Office). Many additional volunteers devoted substantial time to making the event a success.
