Welcome to the M3 FBA

We provide a valuable link between the federal judges and lawyers who serve this District. Whether it is assisting in the development and revision of local rules to assuring that pro se civil litigants receive representation for meritorious claims, for over forty years the FBA-WDWA has worked closely with the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to improve the federal judicial process for the courts, and for lawyers and litigants.

The Federal Bar Association of the Western District of Washington was formed in 1977 by thirty-eight members of the bar of the Western District of Washington. Since then, it has grown and evolved to serve more than 700 members, with our officers and trustees overseeing more than 15 committees and numerous projects and events.

Statement from the M. Margaret McKeown Federal Bar Association

In recent months, our nation has faced unsettling events—protests, loss of life, and moments of violence that have left many shaken and divided. These experiences echo earlier generations’ struggles with injustice, inequity, and disagreement over our shared civic future.

What lasts beyond headlines and conflict are not the loudest voices, but the institutions. Good citizenship calls on us to exercise our rights; good stewardship calls on us to safeguard the institutions that make those rights possible. That dual obligation is owed not only to one another, but to our children and to generations we will never meet. There is room and need for you to act:

  • Engage with and support the institutions that depend on us. Volunteer your time. Assist individuals who feel unheard or unrepresented in bringing their disputes before the courts.

  • Strengthen community. Show up for one another. Build networks of support. Encourage civil dialogue when it feels most difficult.

  • Model public service. Consider serving in government, whether through elected office or professional service. Encourage the dedicated public servants you know—regardless of their role or rank—to stay the course.

  • Invest in the next generation. Visit classrooms. Speak to high school and college students about civics, justice, and the enduring promise of the law. Remind young people that these institutions belong to them and that their voices matter.

  • Support those doing hard work at every level. From the clerks and administrators who keep our justice system functioning, to public-facing workers in transportation, law enforcement, and other essential services—let them know they are seen and appreciated.

These acts of service fully align with our constitutional rights. We can speak out, stand up for our beliefs, and protest peacefully—while still upholding the institutions that make such participation possible.

Our history holds both painful failures and remarkable progress, achieved through perseverance and collective effort.

Will we contribute to the erosion of our civic foundations, or strengthen them so future generations inherit institutions that are resilient, trustworthy, and capable of growth?

As members, we are uniquely positioned to shape that answer. Let us choose service. Let us choose stewardship.
